Words by anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss was kept close to my heart during the filming of "over there".
As to restrain the will to find meaning was the biggest task—beyond the cold, the hunger, and heavy burden.
Once told. This island was name ‘Jeoeogeu’ by the people from the Jeolla Province and later became called Jeju濟州.
Jeoeogeu "over there", is where enlightenment lays.
"over there" is a cinématographe that captures Hallasan throughout a three-year period. A collection of fragmented moments (images and echoes) one encounters during contemplation,
transitory scenery that cannot be revisited.
No stories, no dialect, no text(subtitle).
Camera fixed to a detached angel. Only music and echoes of emerging and dissolving life and death exist.
"over there" was not made to be dubbed as another type of cinema. It is a segment of a meticulous practice towards the belief that the theater can be a profound temple. In hopes that
"over there" could be a sacrifice and ritual act of offering to the ever changing and disappearing Jeoeogeu (Jeju).

Jeju lies in the Korea Strait, 90 km south of Jeolla Province. A volcanic island, dominated by Hallasan: a volcano 1,950metres (6,400 ft) high and the highest mountain in South Korea. Jeju is an island and a mountain at the same time.

“예술에서 언어 혹은 메시지를 발견하게 되면 예술은 더 이상 없는 것과 같습니다.”
인류학자 레비스트로스의 이 문장을 새기며 만들어진 것이 over there이다. 추운 것, 배고픈 것, 무거운 짐보다 말을 아끼고 메시지(의미)를 찾아 떠도는 마음을 추스리는 것이 더 어려웠다.
누군가 말했다. 제주의 어원이 ‘저어그’ , 전라도에서 그렇게 불렀고 그래서 제주濟州가 되었다고...
저어기 over there, 그것은 피안이었다.
over there는 1000여 일에 걸쳐 한라산 입-하산을 반복하면서 계속 스스로에게 질문중인-근원적인 질문 상태에서 만나게 된, 경유하는 풍경 즉, 다시 돌아올 수 없는 경유하는 순간의 편린들을 모으고 나열한 것이다. 스토리도 없고, 말도 없고, 자막도 없다. 움직이지 않는 카메라와 감정 없는 앵글이 있고, 음악과 소리 그리고 생겨남과 사라짐, 생사가 있을 뿐이다.
over there는 영화로서 호명될 또 하나의 그것을 만든 것이 아니라 오늘날 영화관이야말로 좋은 사원(思院)이 될 수 있다는 정교한 믿음으로 실천한 결과의 한쪽이다. 그래서 over there가 달라지고 사라져가는 저어기(제주)에 바치는 제물로, 제의로 받아질 수 있기를 빌어본다.
